A New Look At Leadership and Management

The familiar distinction is that managers get things done and leaders figure out what needs doing. However, leaders in today's fast moving economy have a more important role than just determining a vision and getting others to follow. As technologies, number of employees available, types of work available and global economic restructuring is changing rapidly, organizations must change the way the operate, the way they train people and develop leaders, the marketing strategies employed and the very products and services they provide. In today's world, a leader's true role is to determine what can replace obsolescence, lead the conversation with colleagues as to what needs to happen to make the new change effective. As old strategies rapidly become ineffective, the leader must decide what to put in their place and how to get people to adapt to the change.

When you try to make even a small change in an organization, you see the challenges of implementing lots of change strategies - rapidly. This is exactly the situation facing today's leaders.

Old style strategic planning is obsolete. The world is simply changing too fast to make lists of things to accomplish in the next five years, i.e., develop strategies for new markets, etc. Strategic planning is more short term with rapid change driving the direction. Only those leaders able to communicate effectively - that is, communicate so others want to follow - are able to handle the zigzag strategic maneuvering necessary in today's climate.
